Even with hometown support behind them, the Deathbridge Derby Dames weren’t able to handle the speed and stamina of the Gnarlie’s Angels from Rossland, BC, losing 239-135 in Saturday’s roller derby bout.

Despite the loss, Dames coach Bradford Recsky, is taking it as a learning experience for the team.

“The Dames played with heart and determination on Saturday night. Injuries to key players throughout the game was detrimental, but the Dames commitment and perseverance was impressive,” says Recsky.

“The Gnarlie’s Angels are a skilled and athletic group. The veteran-filled team provided us with invaluable experience,” adds Recsky

Gnarlie’s Angels coach Damon Walton, aka Cousin Vegas, was very pleased with his team’s performance, but the Dame’s hospitality was even more inspiring.

“Derby is a hard-hitting game and this bout was no exception,” says Walton. “What impressed me more than how our team pulled it together on the track, to win over a tough team, is the sportsmanship the Dames displayed. As soon as it was over I was slapping hands with a team full of smiling faces… and warm wishes from members of their team. The Dames are true ambassadors to the sport of roller derby.”

The Dame’s commitment to the league is spreading through Lethbridge as over 700 fans were in attendance. With this bout being only the second one so far hosted in Lethbridge, many in the crowd were new spectators.

First-time derby supporter Ben Rodgers, was surprised with the amount of action.

“I thought it was going to be slower. I didn’t think it was going to be so intense, but there were some wicked hits and it’s an all-around, unbelievable contact sport on wheels,” says Rodgers.

“We were very pleased to see such a great turnout for such a cold winter evening,” says Heather Zarichney, Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild President. “The crowd was extremely supportive and seemed to enjoy the game despite the fact that the Dames did not win.”
