Saturday April 27th marks the second game of the 2013 season for the Deathbridge Derby Dames. Coming off a win against the Foxy Rollers in March the team is going up against Red Deer’s Nightshades. This is the first time the Dames will play the Nightshades and it should provide to be a challenging game. The Nightshades are the newest team to come out of the Red Deer Roller Derby Association.
“Coming off our win last month we have continued to work hard. The Nightshades might be a newer team but they are not to be underestimated. They are heavy hitters and have some great coaches,” says player and Coach Martina Emard, aka Cherri Blaster.
The Deathbridge Derby Dames partnered with ISO FOTO, Bad Apple Salon, Brien Gehring Photography and Hyphen Studio to produce a calendar in support of breast cancer. Sales of the calendar went exceptionally well and the Dames president Heather Nicholson; aka Page Terror, will be presenting a cheque to the Canadian Cancer Society during half time at the April 27th game.
The evening’s event will be taking place at the North Pavilion of the Lethbridge Exhibition Grounds. Doors open at 6 p.m. with first whistle at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance through the league website, your favorite derby girl or at Bert and Mac’s, Blueprint, Culture Craze, Drunken Sailor and Boarderline. Kids 10 and under are free.
With four more home games slated to be played on the Dames home turf Nicholson, says if it wasn’t for our fan support and hard work from the league members, we wouldn’t have seen an increase in our home games for 2013.
“We’ve been hosting bouts for just over three years now. We’ve built a good fan base but there are still so many who don’t know roller derby is in Lethbridge. It’s a great sport to come and watch and we’re so pleased we’ve been able to commit to so many games to give more opportunities to check it out,” says Nicholson.
This all-ages licensed event will also feature a vendor village and plenty of trackside seating for an up-close view of the game. This event is proudly sponsored by 94.1 CJOC, Rollergirl, Nerd Roller Skates, Wicked Skatewear, Bad Girlfriend Skates, Airtech and Lethbridge Vehicle Licensing and Registry.
