[Stratford, ON, July 21, 2023] – A local elite junior roller derby athlete was chosen as captain for Team Canada at the Junior Roller Derby World Cup in Valence, France July 28-30, 2023. Lethbridge’s Jasper “Golden Eagle” Davis was named captain for one of two teams assembled to represent the nation.

Davis was chosen from 35 athletes who will form a female-only and an “open” (all genders) team to play as Team Canada, against eight other nations. He will captain the open team alongside Everton Slaferek of Saskatoon SK. Tess “Tornado” Charlton of Guelph ON and Naomi “Scream Soda” Morrell of Victoria BC will co-captain the female team. This is the first time the competition is being held outside of North America.

“I’m happy to be captain and flattered to be chosen,” says Davis. “It’s very nice to hear I’m thought of as someone who can help organize my team and support my teammates. I know I’ll do a good job.”

“Our captains were selected for their derby knowledge, their ability to stay calm in stressful situations, and their rapport with their fellow teammates,” says Team Canada head coach Caroline “Meow” Reimer. “We have a good balance of east, west, and central Canada who will be wearing the C.”

Roller derby is a contact sport played on traditional quad-style roller skates. At its roots, roller derby began as a sport for women. It has since evolved to be an inclusive sport for all genders. Key to its culture, roller derby players, coaches and referees are known by their “derby names” that often embrace the rough and playful nature of the sport.
