The Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild will be raising funds while hosting a lure party at Henderson Lake this Saturday. Members of the league will be participating in its third-annual skate-a-thon.
Adult and junior roller derby skaters will be skating around the lake for pledges between 1-4 p.m. The league will sponsor Pokémon Go lures for the duration of the skate-a-thon, to add to the fun.
“Many of our members are active Pokémon Go players,” says Tracy Reid, league chair and head of fundraising. “While they are skating to earn pledges they will also be playing the game – hatching eggs and earning candies from buddy Pokémon.”
The skate-a-thon’s “home base” will be at the Kinsmen Picnic Shelter, which is also a Pokestop. Players and park-goers are encouraged to come by and meet skaters, while visiting lures at various Pokestops. The league will be accepting donations for skate-thon participants.
“We’re also using this as an opportunity to teach the community about the sport of roller derby. Even though we’re in our sixth season, many Lethbridge residents are still surprised to learn the city has a roller derby league,” says Reid.
Proceeds from the skate-a-thon will go toward developing Lethbridge adult and junior roller derby programs. Members of the Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild will be accepting pledges up to and during the skate-a-thon on Saturday, Sept. 24 between 1-4 p.m. at the Kinsmen Picnic Shelter.
